When aquaculture meets ecology
We forecast that by 2030, aquaculture will supply over 60 percent of fish destined for direct human consumption. Currently, 9 out of 10 aquatic farms in the world are in Asian countries, mostly based on traditional ecosystem principles (multi-trophic polyculture, VAC system, rice-culture). However, a significant shift from traditional practices towards intensified production system has been observed. Although this shift has allowed an increase of the world production, its sustainability, remains to be proven. New paradigms need to be found in order to maintain production whilst mitigating collateral ecological impacts. |
